DuPont™ Teflon® CFP 6000
fluoropolymer resin
Extrusion Powder

Brand
Teflon® is a registered trademark of DuPont for its brand of fluoropolymer resins, which can only be licensed by DuPont for use in approved applica-tions. Customers who wish to use the Teflon® trademark in connection with DuPont Fine Powder products under license from DuPont should contact (86) 13662986968. Without a license, customers may not identify their product as containing Teflon®, but may refer to the resin as CFP 6000.

Description
DuPont™ Teflon® CFP 6000 TFE fluoropolymer resin is a free-flowing white powder designed for use in insulation and jacketing for high-performance wire and cable.

Where reliable service at high and low tempera-tures, outstanding high-frequency electrical proper-ties and resistance to solvents, hydraulic fluids and corrosive chemicals are required, Teflon® TFE has been the aerospace industry standard for insulation and jacketing for more than 25 years. For ex-ample, insulation of Teflon® TFE helps ensure signal clarity because its dielectric constant is low and stable with changing frequency and tempera-ture. Furthermore, Teflon® TFE has a low dissipa-tion factor that remains unchanged within a broad range of frequencies. Wire and cable constructions with Teflon® TFE offer low-smoke, low-flame spread characteristics, excellent flexibility, small radius bends without failure, and resistance to damage during soldering.

Teflon® CFP 6000 meets the requirements of ASTM D4895 and is certified as a Type I, Grade 3, Class C material. Typical values obtained for Teflon® CFP 6000 under this specification are shown in Table 1. Wire and cable constructions made with Teflon® CFP 6000 meet the require-ments for wire sizes and voltage ratings described in slash sheets applicable to TFE in military speci-fications, including MIL-W-16878, MIL-W-22759 and MIL-C-17.

Because it offers essentially the same finished product property levels as Teflon® 6C, Teflon® CFP 6000 can be used in many applications where Teflon® 6C is used. In addition, Teflon® CFP 6000 offers excellent thermal stability, a property that can prove beneficial in high-temperature wire and cable applications.

Typical finished product properties are shown in Table 2.

Processing
Teflon® CFP 6000 offers wire and cable manufac-turers several advantages compared with other currently available TFE extrusion powders. Produc-tion of consistently high-quality constructions is possible due to a broad extrusion aid acceptance range. In addition, its superior thermal stability allows it to accommodate process excursions.

Direct processing economies can be achieved with Teflon® CFP 6000 because it permits higher extru-sion rates at a given oven temperature profile, which translate into either greater productivity or reduced energy costs. Teflon® CFP 6000 extrudes at rates about 15% faster compared with Teflon® 6C for a given volatizing and sintering oven profile. Also, it permits very high reduction ratios (up to
4,400:1), which means that larger barrels may be used. Another advantage may be achieved with low-pressure extruders because Teflon® CFP 6000 can be extruded at lower pressure for a given reduc-tion ratio. Lower pressure also helps reduce equip-ment maintenance requirements.

Like other TFE extrusion powders, Teflon® CFP 6000 should be blended with extrusion aids in a relatively free-flowing state for best results. Al-though packaging for Teflon® TFE fine powders is designed to minimize the effects of shipping and handling, some compaction may occur. The resin may be restored to the proper condition for blending by cooling for one to two days to below 10°C (50°F), followed by screening below that temperature through fine-mesh screen (4- to 10- mesh). This reduces the danger of deforming and orienting the resin particles during screening and handling. Lumps which are retained on the screen can easily be broken up by shaking in a small clean container at temperatures below 10°C (50°F). Care should be taken to prevent moisture from condens-ing in the screening equipment.

Teflon® CFP 6000 is extruded using liquid organic extrusion aids such as naphtha which wet the resin. Compared with Teflon® 6C, Teflon® CFP 6000 re-quires about 1% by weight less extrusion aid. Ex-trusion aids should be blended with the resin at the screening temperature, and condensation should be prevented.

The paste-like mixture of resin and extrusion aid is made into a preform under light pressure (1.4 MPa [200 psi]). The preform is then forced through a finishing die by a ram extruder. The extrusion aid is volatized at 93° to 302°C (200° to 575°F), and wire and cable insulations and jackets are sintered at 371° to 399°C (700° to 750°F) and then cured to obtain specified properties.

Safety Precautions
WARNING!
VAPORS CAN BE LIBERATED THAT MAY BE HAZARDOUS IF INHALED.
Before using Teflon® CFP 6000, read the Material Safety Data Sheet and the detailed information in the “Guide to the Safe Handling of Fluoropolymer Resins, Latest Edition,” published by the Fluoropolymers Division of The Society of the Plastics Industry—available from DuPont.

Open and use containers only in well-ventilated areas using local exhaust ventilation (LEV). Vapors and fumes liberated during hot processing, or from smoking tobacco or cigarettes contaminated with Teflon® CFP 6000, may cause flu-like symptoms (chills, fever, sore throat) that may not occur until several hours after exposure and pass within about 36 to 48 hr. Vapors and fumes liberated during hot processing should be exhausted completely from the work area; contamination of tobacco with polymers should be avoided. Mixtures with some finely di- vided metals, such as magnesium or aluminum, can be flammable or explosive under some conditions.

Packaging
Teflon® CFP 6000 is packed in 25-kg (55.1-lb) fiber or plastic drums.
